Funeral services for Ruth Gilman, 88, of Kennebec, SD were held Saturday, May 8, 2004 at the United Methodist Church in Kennebec, SD with burial in the Kennebec Cemetery at Kennebec, SD.

Ruth Gilman, 88, of Kennebec, SD died on May 4, 2004, at McKennan Hospice Care Unit in Sioux Falls.

Ruth was born at Kennebec, SD on July 22, 1915, to Art and Grace (Floyd) Packman. She grew up and attended school at Kennebec, SD.

Ruth was married to Arthur Gilman on September 23, 1933, in Chamberlain, SD. They made their home north of Kennebec where they farmed and ranched for their entire life. Shortly after they were married, they purchased and ran Iron Nation Store and Post Office. The first one burned down but they moved and started another. They lived their entire life in Lyman County, retiring to Kennebec in 1973. Ruth loved to cook and feeding family and friends was one of the biggest joys of her life. Her grandchildren all have a collection of "Grandma's recipes". She cooked in many cafes including Hutch's Cafe, Presho Livestock Auction and the Big K in Kennebec. Even after retirement, she baked for a restaurant in Zapata, Texas. Many people in the Kennebec area had her make her well-known recipes for their special occasions.

She loved to travel and has traveled to many parts of the world including Hawaii, Alaska, Canada, and many European countries. She also did a great deal of traveling within the continental United States.

Following her husband's death in 1984 she continued to live in their house in town until March, 2002, when she moved to New Life Boarding Home in Presho.

Ruth was a member of United Methodist Church, Busy Bee Club, See Your Neighbor Club, Cowbelles and Senior Citizens of both Kennebec and Presho. She was recognized by the 4-H one year for always being the only one to run a lunch stand during Achievement Days.

Ruth is survived by her four children: Bill and Mary Lou Gilman, Kennebec, SD, Ron and Myrna Gilman, Fort Pierre, SD, Jim and Karen Gilman, Kennebec, SD, and Alyce Ruth McKay, Sioux Falls, SD; 10 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, 5 step great grandchildren and 2 step great, great grandchildren..

She was preceded in death by her husband, Art, her mother and father, Grace and Art Packman, a sister, Jessie Gifford and a brother George Packman.
