Ida (Juhnke) Smith, 97, of Vivian died Wednesday, June 2, 2004 at New Life Boarding Center in Presho, SD. Services were 2 pm Tuesday, June 8, 2004 at the Lutheran Church in Vivian with burial at the Vivian Cemetery.

Ida was born November 18, 1906 to Reinhold and Emelie Meillaud Juhnke on the family farm homestead south of Vivian, SD. After attending grade school there, she went to Presho and graduated from high school in 1926.

She attended Teachers College in Springfield, SD and taught in rural schools in Lyman County. Ida married Herbert Smith at Presho June 8, 1929. They had five children and lived in Lyman and Stanley County, then moving to a farm near Vivian, where they lived until retirement.

Ida was a life member of the Vivian Legion Auxiliary, and a member of the Vivian Lutheran Church. She taught Sunday school, and was active in the womens organizations there. She derived great pleasure from her work with projects for Lutheran World Relief, helping with quilt making for many, many years. Ida was extensively traveled, which she enjoyed, but was always happy to get back to her home in South Dakota.

Ida is survived by her sons, Lorne and wife Carolyn, Dick and Lyle and his wife Mary; one brother Walt of Presho and one sister Irene Jewell of Rockwall, TX, thirteen grandchildren and twenty-three great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Herb in 1982, a son Robert and daughter Marlys in 1939, a daughter-in-law Joyce in 2002, and one grandson, Harlan; a brother Art and wife, two sisters Lydia Weller and Helen Spencer and their spouses, and in-laws Mable Juhnke and Earl Jewell.
