New Game Warden arrives
By Lucy Halverson
Conservation Officer Dan Altman, who just completed six months of training with South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks, recently moved to Presho to serve as game warden for western Lyman County and all of Jones County.
Altman spent the past six months training with other conservation officers in the field at Sturgis and Pierre, plus completing the law enforcement training.
Prior to being hired full time with GF&P, Altman worked for the agency in the Chamberlain area as summer help and also spent two summers as an intern with the department.
A 2004 graduate of Kimball High School and a 2008 graduate of South Dakota State University, Altman stated that being a conservation officer or game warden is what he always wanted to do. “I hunt and fish about every season there is,” said Altman.
Game, Fish & Parks has rented office space from Hubbard Implement and will have an office on the north end of the building. Altman is in the process of setting up the new office. The phone number remains the same, 895-2138. According to Altman, if he’s not in the office leave a message or if an immediate response is needed during the day people should call the office in Chamberlain at 734-4530.
While Altman was not involved with this year’s pheasant brood survey, he’s familiar with the two Lyman County routes. “The north route numbers were about average, but the south route is way up. We’re looking pretty good for a great pheasant season,” concluded Altman.
“If you see my pickup at the office, stop by and say hi,” said Altman, who looks forward to meeting the residents of western Lyman County.
Altman and his fiancée Becky plan to marry next summer.
