New Track Completed
By Lucy Halverson Lyman County Herald
Lyman Superintendent Bruce Carrier informed the Lyman School board Monday night, that Fischer Track of Boone, Iowa had completed their portion of the track construction project at a cost of $376,000. Lane striping and lettering was added last Thursday.
Mr. Carrier stated that new signs will be posted at the track explaining the rules of general use. No animals or wheeled vehicles are allowed on the track. Members of the public wishing to use the track will be instructed to walk or run on the outside lanes. In addition, the signs will give people detailed information regarding the number of laps required to achieve certain distances.
Other items still needed at the track in order to host future track meets are 80 hurdles, hurdle movers, and hurdle starting blocks. The shot put area remains to be finished plus according to Mr. Carrier additional fencing should be installed along both the east and west side of the bleachers to block access to the track field. A recent incident of vandalism at another school in South Dakota also brought up the issue of installing security cameras at the complex. It was Mr. Carrier’s recommendation that the board move $50,000 from Impact Aid to Capital Outlay to fund the extra items needed to complete the track project. The board approved the recommendation.
A short dedication ceremony is being planned for the September 25 home football game.
Mr. Carrier reported that it was his decision to refrain from allowing students to view President Obama’s speech live last Wednesday due to the negative publicity surrounding the event. He reported to the board that after viewing the speech himself and finding it to be “a good motivational speech,” all Lyman students have viewed the President’s speech. “It was a nice speech for our kids to be part of,” Mr. Carrier said.
In other matters before the board: •School property deemed surplus was presented and approved for a surplus sale to be held Oct. 14, 2009. Three home school requests were approved. •A teacher’s aide contract for Tabitha Harmon was approved. John Link was hired as the after school activity bus driver. •Several staff lane changes were approved. •87 families have signed up for the Parent Portal, an online program that allows parents to view their students grades. •An anemometer will be installed near the practice football field to record wind data for a possible wind tower.
