Early morning rollover claims two lives
By Lucy Halverson Two Presho teenage girls died in an early morning one-vehicle rollover accident Friday about 5 miles west of Presho on Highway 248. A third woman was seriously injured.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol identified the victims as Maci M. Busack, 16, and Alexis (Lexie) A. Bowsher, 19, both were pronounced dead at the scene.
Candace L. Volmer, 21, was transported by the Lyman County Ambulance to a Chamberlain hospital and then transferred to a Sioux Falls hospital. All three girls were currently living in Presho.
It was estimated that the accident happened at 3:51 a.m. on S.D. Highway 248, known as old Highway 16. The three were traveling east in a 1995 Chevrolet Silverado pickup registered to Bowsher. The driver overcorrected when the vehicle drifted toward the side of the road. The pickup rolled several times on the roadway. All three of the occupants were thrown from the vehicle as none were wearing seatbelts.
A passing motorist, Winter Langdeau, reported the accident around 4 am.
As of press time, investigators had not released information regarding which girl was driving.
Busack a junior at Lyman is the daughter of Jennifer and Casey Reindl of Presho and Charlie Busack of Rapid City.
Bowsher worked at Hutch’s and attended classes at DWU in Mitchell. She is the daughter of Rev. Thom and Deb Bowsher. Rev. Thom and Lexi moved to Presho last summer.
Volmer, the daughter of Ron and Deb, works at several different businesses in the Presho/Pierre area.
The investigation by the South Dakota Highway Patrol is continuing. Lyman County Sheriff, Lyman County Ambulance and Presho Fire Department assisted at the scene.
