Floyd Peterson, 49 of White River died Wednesday, June 2 at his home in White River. Services were 10:00 am Monday, June 7, 2004 at the Presho Gym with Pastor John Hockett officiating. Burial was at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
Floyd was born June 16, 1954 to Clare and Grace (Anderson) Peterson, in Chamberlain.
He grew up in Presho, as a young boy he lived a few years in Lake Norden with his family. He then moved back to Presho with his family and graduated from Lyman County high school in 1972. Right after he turned 18, on July 7, 1972 he left for the Air Force. While in the Air Force he was stationed at White Sands Proving Ground AFB in Alamogordo NM, Nellis AFB, Las Vegas NV and Thailand. He was honorably discharged on August 7, 1975. Floyd was an Ammunition Maintenance Specialist.
Floyd helped his dad in his garage as a mechanic growing up. He tried many different jobs before working at the Lyman County School in Kennebec. He worked at the school for 17 years before moving to Pierre. For 4 years he worked in the Pierre School System, where he was the head of the custodial crew at Riggs. Three years ago he moved to White River where he was the head of the maintenance dept. at the White River School.
While living in Pierre Floyd met his wife Sheryle. They were married November 9, 2000 in Pierre. On April 19, 2001 he adopted his daughter, on her 13th birthday.
Floyd loved the outdoors, he enjoyed being on the river with his boat and water skiing. He loved working with his hands. He had just purchased a 1971 Dodge pickup, a new toy in which he was excited to tinker with. Floyd loved children; all the children he had been around for years were "his kids". Floyd was very proud of his country and that he served his nation. He was a lifetime member of the Legion and VFW.
He was preceded in death by his paternal and maternal grandparents; his father Clare in 1988; one infant brother Carlyle; one infant sister Sharon; and his step-son Jesse in August of 2003.
He is survived by his wife Sheryle, his mother and stepfather Clyde and Grace Rice, of Winner, daughter Jennifer, step-son James of Pierre, brothers Gayle Joe (Elsie) Peterson of Pierre, Larry Peterson of Reliance, Sisters Deb (Ken) Wendelboe, Juletta Peterson of Mitchell, step brothers Brian Rice, David Berens, Harold Berens, Step-sisters Becca Galpin, and Joana Rice, two granddaughters Violet and Kiara, mother-in-law Delores Roush of Pierre, 5 nephews Steven, Richie, Brock, Jordan and Justin, 5 nieces Tonya Billie Jo, Chandra, Michelle and Wendy, many aunts, uncles and cousins, Step-mother Dorothy of Fulton, and special friend of the family Nicole Chivington of Mitchell.
